PISA: The Square of Miracles

A region in Central Italy, Tuscany is known for its landscapes, tradition, history and artistic legacy. It is regarded as the birthplace of Renaissance.

View from the train
Leaning Tower of Pisa, being one of the Wonders of the World, was of course on our list of places to visit when in Italy.

From Milan, we traveled about 2 hours to reach Florence, Tuscany and about an hour more to Pisa via ItaliaRail.

THE SQUARE OF MIRACLES | PIAZZA DI MIRACOLI

Piazza di Miracoli of Pisa is the most splendiferous assemblage of Romanesque architecture in Italy. This is where the Pisa Baptistry, Pisa Cathedral (Duomo di Pisa) and the remarkable leaning Tower of Pisa are located, while along one side of it is the camposanto or cemetery

The Square of Miracles

THE BAPTISTERY OF ST. JOHN
Placed at the head of the Field of Miracles, a symbolic crown in Romanesque style.
The largest baptistry in Italy, constructed in 1152 and completed in 1363. Similar to the cathedral and tower that was on an unstable sand, the Baptistry leans 0.6 degrees toward the cathedral.

Trivia: GALILEO was baptized in the Baptistery.

The Baptistery leans 0.6 degrees toward the cathedral

THE PISA CATHEDRAL
The center piece  and the heart of the field is the Duomo, the Cathedral, entitled to Santa Maria Assunta (St. Mary of Assumption);
one of Italy's major architectural monument.
Its construction began in 1064 and largely redecorated after a fire in 1595.

THE PISA CATHEDRAL

THE LEANING TOWER OF PISA
The bell tower is located behind the cathedral.
The last of the 3 major buildings to be built on the piazza. Its construction began in 1173 and took place in 3 stages over the course of 177 years with bell-chamber added only in 1372.
TOWER OF PISA
The original height of the Tower of Pisa is 60 meters;
now on actual, its highest side is 56.67 m while the lowest side is 55.86 m
TOWER OF PISA
Pisa got is name in 600 BC from a Greek word meaning "marshly land."
Aside from the Tower, the Baptistery and Cathedral is also sinking....

What impressed me the most is that these buildings, as seen in the photos, doesn't look old at all.
Its gray marble and white stone shine still on the emerald green lawn.

The beautiful destination is the reward that we look forward after a long journey...
and The Square of Miracles in Pisa is indeed a great reward;
it comes with a memorable adventure and a lot of fun from wonderful people you are with.
