Another Summer Passed...

It's a lovely day out there! Bright sunny day with cool breeze of winter wind.
Summer is finally over... just as quick as October.
Time runs fast; I have counted several summers here in UAE and have waited with enthusiasm for winters. This transition is significant for me. If you have noticed, I have written few blogs about this, annually -- when its almost winter.

What makes this time remarkable for me?
I guess, being in the Middle East, knowing that you are in the desert, having experience the heat of summer and have survived it,  makes this time an extra special above the other phases.

During this time, it feels good to look back few months back... while you are covering yourself from the sun and the hot wind that blows on your face. The feeling of survival and victory that you have overcome the scorching heat of summer.

This year, blazing wind blew several times... I know its not only me, but many of us had a searing summer.

Yellow Light Is On...

"Today marks the end of a regime indifferent to the appeals of the people. It is not Noynoy who found a way. You are the reason why the silent suffering of the nation is about to end. This is the beginning of my burden, but if many of us will bear the cross, we will lift it, no matter how heavy it is." -excerpt from Noy's Inaugural Address

Once again, it is the voice of the people that was heard all over the country; and this time, it didn't happen in Edsa...
As the first ever automated election happened in the Philippines, all ballots were canvassed... there might be some lapses, but the votes were counted.
And today's inauguration marks the beginning of a better Philippines.

As P'Noy said, "You are the reason why the silent suffering of the nation is about to end."

People unites again...

One in prayer... One in hope that the country will recover.

Indeed, Noynoy's time was the hardest transition in the history, as he inherited the worst situation in the country. And all eyes will be on him...

Hopefully, people won't just watch him but will join him in rebuilding our nation.
There is still hope... we just have to stand again...

And the change that we all wanted does not only rely on the hands of P'Noy... because it is us that will make this country move forward... it is in every Filipino people.
We have to start within us... within the family... within the community...

It should start within ourselves...

"I will not be able to face my parents and you who have brought me here if do not fulfill the promises I made.
My parents sought nothing less, died for nothing less, than democracy and peace. I am blessed by this legacy. I shall carry the torch forward." - P'Noy

May we adapt the same value that our leader has for his family... for his parents...
For if we all want our parents to be proud of us... can you imagine how peaceful our country will be? How successful each  of us may be?
If we are parents who wanted to leave a good legacy to our kids... will there ever a domestic violence again?

The success of a country relies on its people.
"...if many of us will bear the cross, we will lift it, no matter how heavy it is." -P'Noy

Now, the Yellow light is on...
It doesn't mean Go or Stop...
but simply a warning; a signal to mellow down; to be ready...

Because change is coming and we all have to prepare...

Labor Pains

I've seen the movie.
But this is not about giving birth...
I don't think I can write something about it nor will attempt to do one; I am not Thea and firing a pregnant woman is legal here in UAE.
Anyways, back to labor pains...
In Phils. May 1 is Labor day (I know this is 4 days overdue)...
Labor day is not being celebrated on a positive side, instead you can see big protests on streets; laborers begging for a wage increase... I haven't heard or seen any program or events that give recognition for the best employees or some inspiring activities to look forward on this National Day for Laborers.

I have 6 years experience working in Manila, before I became an OFW. I have felt these 'labor pains' too, working day and night (since I am in TV network), on call 24/7, just to received a decent pay LESS TAX and all other deductions which really kills the work force.

15-20% of what you've worked for will be counted as tax which means, about 2-4 days (sometimes overnight) was allotted to - road construction, medical services, government leaders' salary (just to name some) etc etc.

Aside from these citizen's responsibility, there are also SSS, Health Insurance and Pag-Ibig deductions, which accumulate another approx. 10% of salary.

What's left with the workers are 70-75% of their income... which again, the 20% of that was paid to VAT...

Isn't that worst than actual labor pains???

While some average employees are 'just' satisfied with what they receive, majority are underpaid.
Underpaid in the sense that the salary wont really fit to have a decent living in Manila. Everything are costly... rents, gasoline, food, commodities. That is for single like me... I wonder how parents managed to survived and bring their kids to school...

Being an OFW, I enjoyed the privilege of being 'tax-free' in UAE. I received my salary exactly the same as what is written in my contract... no more, no less! And I am 100% insured (without paying extra for HealthCare). Shopping is more exciting without VAT!!!

All the benefits were given fairly. Government funds were distributed to improve the country, from construction, transportation and services...

If only Phil. government is not corrupt and rules were implemented... We can do better than the other countries. We have the best workers in the world.

OFWs are the key employees of big companies and institutions... From receptionists to accountants, from construction workers to engineers, nursing aides to specialized doctors... We are the nannies who devote ourselves to other's child... The caregivers who give love and time to elders... The silent partners of working parents, who manage other's home and families...

I belong to these workers... we are enjoying financial stability - - - away from home. People who chose to fly outside the country to give better lives to families back home...

It is just a matter of choice. Being home, pay tax and work forever or leave for sometime, earn more, come back and start business... or leave and migrate to other country.

Embarrasing but true... many Filipinos chose the 3rd option because they can no longer see a good future in Philippines...

The upcoming May 10 Election is the make or break in Philippine government... hence, the result is not only in the hands of the people...

May our Lord God guide every Filipino in choosing the new leader and may it be a clean and honest election. God bless the Philippines!

Ngayon, walang mayaman, walang mahirap.

Gutom. Puyat.

Nakawan, pasabog, patayan.

"Manila, Manila, I keep coming back to Manila!"

What Went Wrong?

their case is now open to public... it is illegal recruitment.

but how can we call it illegal when in fact they all passed the process of application, through different government agencies.
they inquired about the status of the recruitment agency - CYM International Services and Placement Agency Inc. from the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency:
Valid from 06/05/2007 - 06/04/2011
they said that according to the management of CYM International, soon, they will relaunch a new company name - WORLD QUEST HUMAN RESOURCES. they even gave them some promo shirt for this:
beware of this company!

a major step for applying abroad is to undergo a PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION SEMINAR or PDOS.
once you passed the PDOS, you can now go to Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to be registered as OFW by paying:
1. POEA Processing Fee
2. OWWA Membership
3. PhilHealth Medcare

the fees will costs more than 2 thousand pesos... and an ordinary laborer in our country cant really afford such amount PLUS the processing fee of 150 thousand pesos in the agency...
what else can a poor man aspiring to work abroad for a better life can do to pay all these?
well... CYM has been so generous to them: they've assisted these people through finance loan.
they have presented these copies of post - dated checks that they signed as payment that reached almost half a million pesos:
they let them open a checking account to EASTWEST BANK to guarantee their loans to:
1. PARAMOUNT LIFE & GEN. INS. CORP. (3 checks) - 331, 953.00
- Loan Insurance.

2. ASIA UNITED BANK (17 checks) - 18,443.00
- Agency / Processing Fee .

3. HQR TECHNICAL INS. AGENCY (1 check) - 5,000.00
- Opening of Eastwest Bank Checking Account

4. RJJ LACABA FINANCING CORP. (3 check)- 136,320.00
- Agency / Processing Fee

5. RJJ LACABA FINANCING CORP. (15 checks) - 7,574.00
- Opening of Asia United Bank (for their remittance)
they have reached the final stage... had debts that is payable for lifetime. well, maybe not! with the declared salary of 5,200 Dirhams or around 65,000 Pesos per month... 500,000.00 is nothing compared to the better future that awaits these drivers.

their EMPLOYMENT Visa from Dubai arrived:
all set with their E-Ticket: MLA-HK / HK-DXB
as they reached Hongkong, they were surprised that they were given a new visa that should be presented in Dubai Immigration: TOURIST VISA.
from there, they realized that they were illegally hired.
having 2 Visas in their hand - Employment and Tourist - with the same serial number, which means 1 is tampered.
and definitely, the original visa issued to them by Dubai government is Tourist, since they cannot enter the Emirates illegally.
these 137 men, passed Philippine Immigration in NAIA holding a TAMPERED Visa.

many words have been said regarding this issue.
and now, the Philippine Government committed to investigate...
we know how long will it take...
soon, this issue will be a part of history, without even receiving justice...
this is Philippine Government!
i dont know what difference this blog can make... but i believe, in my own little way, this will keep everybody informed about the system that we have in our country...

the sum of parts...

17 days after the publication of Express regarding our fellow Filipinos who were victims of "illegal recruitment", the Filipinos' BAYANIHAN was felt all over the UAE...

Letters circulated within the Pinoy communities - office by office, friends of friends, churches and different religious and non-religious organizations...
in less than a week, these people were able to gather monetary donations, collected goods and organized the mission of helping these innocent Kabayans in the nearby Emirate, Ajman.
11 April 2009 - Black Saturday.
The group organized by Aileen and Jet headed to Hamriya Free Zone, Ajman to visit these 137 Kabayans...
we were individuals, and not identified by any group/organization, some are families... others are friends. to sum it all, there were 9 cars that pulled together with common goal.

not just to give food but to let them know that there are a lot of kabayans here who cares for them and are willing to support them in this plight.

before lunch time, we reached the camp...
at the end of Hamriya Free Zone - opposite damp site.
Where they stay: the accomodation building of Al Tomooh, CYM's partner agency here in UAE. the buildings are still under construction. this area is also being used as an storage area to keep the chemicals (being used for gun powders). these are flammable... in the middle of the desert where the heat reaches 50 degrees - danger is just within their reach, aside from the germs that they can get from a nearby dumpsite.
NO Air Condition. Only generators provide the electricity, which is only from 6-12 midnight. with the dump site as their neighbor, they have to keep their windows open despite of the polluted air. Summer is fast approaching. these men are not camels that can resist the hot temp in this desert.
but despite their situation... we were greeted with the Filipino tradition - "KAMUSTA PO? TULOY PO KAYO..." with sincere smile from their faces.
each of them assisted us, one by one... and as they said, they are getting use to this... since they were visited by thousands of kababayans for almost 3 days then. they even said, "NAUBOS NA PO ATA ANG LUHA NAMIN... NUNG UNA, SA HIRAP NA DINADANAS NAMIN DITO... AT NGAYON, SA DAMI PO NG TULONG NA DUMADATING."
each of them shared their own stories... they never get tired of telling what happened. and they were so grateful for all the help extended to them. despite of this tragedy, these people are still full of strength and determination to fight for the truth.

majority of them - 95% preferred to stay... they think that it is more hopeless in Pinas, compared here. amidst the crisis, these Kabayans are determined to look for some decent job here than to go back to poverty.
while some of us are talking to these men, others were preparing the lunch for them. with these Filipino dishes, the lunch has been a little "fiesta" that makes the "salo-salo" more special.

after lunch, they invited us to come inside and show their rooms, tell stories on how they are managing to survive...
Filipinos creativity and funny side were seen as we walk the hallway... in each doors, their group and names were posted...

yet these doors are open to those who want to enter their world.

as we come inside... their smiles welcomes their visitors. the glow in their eyes were enough to express their gratitudes for all the help that they received.

their rooms were crowded, yet it is clean... they might be lacking resources but they were able to improvised some things... they covered the windows with transparent wrappers to illiminate the coming of the polluted air from dump site, repair some gas stoves that they got out of garbage, and made their own barbel for their excercise...

Aside from the goods that are seen on the hallway... each room has their own stocks too. for sure, these goodies will last for atleast 3 months, but of course, none of them is hoping to be there for that long...
they were positive in telling us that they will no longer consume everything, and soon they leave, it will be hand over to other Filipino Organizations to help others as well...

somehow, their voices were heard.
the Philippine government is now in action... and while waiting for the results of the initial investigation, these kababayans are secured...
they dont need to feed themselves by means of picking and selling cans from the garbage, neither they will no longer risk their lives from eating those grown tomatoes in the dump site...
we are keeping our fingers crossed that the resolution from the goverment will be as quick as the action of the OFWs here who gathered help for this people.

this is just step one. not even a solution to the real problem that they are facing now...
