Sheikh Zayed Mosque


The largest mosque in the United Arab Emirates -- Eight largest in the world.


Named after Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan
founder and the first President of UAE.  
His wake was also buried on this place.

  
The main dome is the largest in the world and is 87 metres high with a diameter of 32.8 metres.

There are 82 domes of 7 different sizes covering the outside yard and the main building.



4 minarets on the four corners of the mosque which rise about 115m in height. 


The mosque is large enough to accommodate 40,000 worshippers.


The main prayer hall can accommodate up to 9,000 worshippers.
Two rooms next to the main prayer hall, with a 1,500-capacity each, are for the exclusive use of women.


 Its archways are quintessentially Moorish.

 

The mosque has Ablution area for men and women situated on the North East and South East corners of the Sahan (open prayer) areas.  


REAL GOLD cubes were designed on the tiles.


  
The crescents featured on the top of the domes used 24 carat gold.



The mosque stands as a symbol of the warm hospitality and traditions of Abu Dhabi.

Construction cost: 2 billion dirhams ($545 million)
